QE2 News 03-01-2013

A last chance opportunity to save the Queen Elizabeth 2 could see her brought back to Britain. Respected maritime blog Maritime Matters is reporting on plans by a London-based consortium bid to bring the QE2 back from Dubai to be permanently moored on the River Thames in East London.

The plans would see the QE2 relocated to the north bank of the River Thames, upriver of the Thames Barrier opposite the O2, the Millennium Dome. With around 600 rooms, the QE2 would be sympathetically renovated to serve as a hotel, entertainment and conference venue. Much of Five Deck would be given over to a reception and museum.

Additional land-based developments include parking, a reception and commercial buildings. The plans provide a natural fit to the wider redevelopment of the Silvertown area. With CrossRail connections from 2018, the new Emirates Air Line cable car, the nearby London City Airport and Excel conference exhibition centre, and new development at Silvertown Quays by the Royal Victoria Dock from 2014, the QE2 would a fantastic focal point for the area.
