Former master of the Queen Elizabeth 2 Captain Peter Jackson passes away, aged 86. Peter Jackson was born on July 6 1922 in Cleethorpes. He went to sea at the age of 16, joining the Blue Funnel Line. He served in the Merchant Navy during World War I. On 28 May 1942 Peter Jackson survived the sinking of the Holt & Company liner Mentor when she was torpedoed by the U-106.
After the end of hostilities Peter Jackson obtained his Master's Certificate in 1948. He later joined the Cunard Line, working for Cunard for 36 years. His first captaincy was aboard the Franconia in 1968 and he was appointed Master of the QE2 in 1973. He served as Captain of the QE2 during her most dangerous assignment during the Falklands war. Despite the dangers some 650 officers and crew volunteered to sail with the task force to the South Atlantic. The QE2 arrived at South Georgia on 27 May, returning to Southampton on 11 June. Captain Jackson retired in 1983.
After being widowed in 1953 Captain Jackson met his second wife, Pamela, aboard the Cunard Line Caronia where she served as a nurse. They married in 1957 and had a daughter. Captain Peter Jackson, who died on Christmas Eve 2008, is survived by his wife and daughter.
