Dubai developer Nakheel announces plans for the QE2 to be berthed at Palm Jumeirah are shelved. According to reports published by Emirates-based publication The National, developer Nakheel has scrapped plans to position the QE2 at a specially-constructed pier at Palm Jumeirah, instead opting to develop over one-hundred town-houses on the site.
The plans mark the first public announcement of a major project in Dubai since the economic downturn forced the cancellation of key projects because of financial problems. The development would see 102 town-houses constructed on a "spur" of land extending from the Palm Jumeirah Island.
Speaking about plans for the QE2, the chairman of Nakheel, Ali Rashid Lootah stated that "The QE2 will be placed in a much better location...The Government of Dubai is developing an up-to-date modern cruise terminal. That will be better environment. It will stay in Dubai. The QE2 will stay in Dubai."
