Anchor from the Queen Elizabeth 2 officially unveiled in ceremony on Southampton's 'QE2 Mile'. In a ceremony at 6pm on 1 September 2011 the anchor was unveiled by Mayor Terry Matthews, Council Leader Royston Smith and Cunard's Managing Director Peter Shanks. The QE2's spare anchor has been installed outside Holy Rood Church on Southampton's High Street.
Each of QE2's anchor - including the spare - measures 4.3 metres (14 ft) high by 2.7 metres (9 ft) wide. Cast in steel each weighs 12½ tonnes and was raised and lowered by separate windlasses on the fo'c'sle deck by a 1,080 foot long anchor chain. The QE2 also originally had a stern anchor, weighing 7 ¼ tonnes.
Holy Rood Church was bombed during the Second World War and is now a memorial to the Merchant Navy. The QE2 Mile route through the city was designated in the summer of 2009 and forms a trail with eleven pavement plaques, linking Town Quay to the Centotaph in Southampton's Watt's Park.
