QE2 News 29-04-2011

Preparations are underway in Southampton for the permanent display of the QE2's anchor this summer. Work has begun on the pavement outside Holy Rood Church to prepare foundations for the display of QE2's 12½ tonne spare anchor. The work is due to be completed by summer 2011. The anchor will form part of the QE2 Mile, linking Southampton's Cenotaph to the waterfront Town Quay.

Following the QE2's arrival in Dubai, a ceremony took place in Southampton to mark the hand-over of the QE2's spare anchor from Cunard to the City of Southampton. John Duffy, the QE2's Hotel Manager, received the anchor on the behalf of the city. Discussions then took place to decide the best location for the anchor.

Holy Rood Church was bombed during the Second World War and is now a memorial to the Merchant Navy. The church houses a memorial to the Titanic's firemen, sailors and stewards. The QE2 Mile forms a trail through the town centre, with eleven plaques set in the pavement mark key events in the city's history.
