Ian McNaught, the QE2's final master, to join Trinity House in September 2011 as new Deputy Master. Trinity House was incorporated by Royal Charter in 1514. The corporation - a maritime charity - is the General Lighthouse Authority for England and Wales, with responsibility for lighthouses, buoys, beacons and satellite navigation technology. These navigation aids are vital for the safe navigation of vessels in some of the world's busiest shipping lanes.
Captain McNaught's maritime career began with the BP Tanker Company and later Hullgates Shipping of Grimsby, before moving to the P&O Line and later the Cunard Line. He first joined the QE2 in September 1987 as a Second Officer later becoming Staff Captain in 1991. In April 2003 Captain McNaught became the QE2's twenty-first Master and the QE2's youngest master at the age of forty-eight. He was master of the QE2 on her final voyage to Dubai in November 2008.
Describing his new role as Executive Chairman of Trinity House, Captain McNaught spoke of there being "no greater opportunity than this, to use all my maritime experience and expertise gathered during my career at sea" and the role as "the pinnacle of a successful career as a Master Mariner".
