QE2 News 21-07-2010

Ian McNaught, the QE2's final captain, talks about the liner in a BBC Radio Scotland interview. A BBC Scotland Newsdrive story reports "that the fully functional icon could be broken up for scrap as she languishes at a dock in Dubai". Speaking to presenter Mhairi Stuart the QE2's final master shares his personal thoughts about her future. Captain McNaught highlights the situation in Dubai and how the "QE2 seems to have been put to the bottom of the pile."

Asked about the condition of the ship, Captain McNaught states that "it's a long time since we left her. We left her there in November 2008 and time is marching on" but stresses that "they [Istithmar, owners of the QE2] might be looking after her better than we think."

Commenting on Internet rumours of a move to Freemantle in Australia, Captain McNaught says "the best place would be to bring her back home". A move to the Clyde would be "the very, very best thing that could happen to her...it would take an awful lot of money of course to bring her back...[but]...she would make a fantastic attraction. And at the end of the day she is the last great British-built transatlantic liner. She's a huge piece of our mercantile heritage."
