The RMS Queen Mary featured some of the grandest and most beautiful interior designs ever seen aboard an ocean liner. The interior design was clearly influenced by the Art Deco movement, characterized by strong curves and geometrical forms. The interiors included over fifty different types of wood veneers from across the world, along with modern materials including glass, metals and enamel work. These were used throughout the entire ship, alongside exquisite decorative friezes, intricate marquetry and carving, delicate gilding, elegant metalwork and highly decorative murals. Leading exponents of the Art Deco movement were commissioned by Cunard to provide unique, contemporary pieces of artwork that were installed in public spaces within the Queen Mary, predominantly in cabin-class but also in tourist-class. These pieces lent the ship an unimstakable grandeur that reflected a new-found confidence in the modern age.
