QE2 News 20-07-2009

Nahkeel have confirmed rumours that the QE2 may be temporarily moved to Cape Town in South Africa. Following the stories circulating in the press concerning the QE2's departure from Dubai to other ports around the world Nakheel confirmed today there are plans to re-locate the QE2 to Cape Town for eighteen months.

This would co-incide with the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and the plans would see the QE2 anchored at the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront in Cape Town for a period of eighteen months, subject to the approval of the relevant port authorities in Cape Town. The QE2 would provide a useful boost to accomodation during the tournament.

She would have a small refit to ready her for use as a floating hotel. A Nakheel spokesman confirmed it was the company's intention "to provide a short term opportunity to enjoy QE2 as a stationary hotel in her current condition before refurbishment begins". The vessel would then return to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates for conversion to one of Dubai's unique tourist attractions.
